Muncaster Castle Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years. The Castle is a treasure chest of art and antiques The castle is bordered by beautiful gardens, set to a backdrop of the spectacular Lakeland Fells. Within the gardens we have children’s playgrounds and the Meadowvole Maze.

The World Owl Trust Meet the Birds at 2.30pm during the summer and watch wild herons feed at 4pm daily.

Both our launches use electric motors instead of diesel, with solar panels helping to charge the batteries - enabling the boats to be environmentally friendly and quieter.

Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, the railway that journeys through 7 miles of ever changing, gorgeous scenery from the sleepy setting of the only coastal village in the National Park, Ravenglass, to the rugged foothills at the head of the Eskdale Valley and the foot of England’s highest mountains, the Scafells.

The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is the oldest and longest narrow gauge railway in the Lake District, known affectionately as La’al Ratty meaning “ little railway “. Take a journey behind our heritage steam engines, some dating back to 1894, and enjoy the nostalgia of steam in Lakeland.
These narrow gauge steam engines take you to the hills with a 1 in 55 gradient at points from the only coastal village in the National Park, Ravenglass, once a bustling port and of great significance in Roman times.

Ravenglass is widely regarded as the most southerly point in the unique defensive system developed in the days of Emperor Hadrian.

Muncaster Castle

Muncaster Castle has been home to the Pennington family for over 800 years and legend has it that it is one of the most haunted places in England.

The Castle is a treasure chest of art and antiques which includes The Great Hall with dramatic rich red and wood panelling dating from the medieval period. The Library has a magnificent 40 foot high galleried room lined with over 6000 books.

Bordered by beautiful gardens, set to a backdrop of the spectacular Lakeland Fells. Unusual plants, trees and flowers from all over the world grow in the landscaped areas and the wild woods.

Within the gardens we have children’s playgrounds and the Meadowvole Maze.

The World Owl Trust is home to one of the largest collections of owls in the world. Meet the Birds at 2.30pm during the summer and watch wild herons feed at 4pm daily.
